How does the dual study program work?
Depending on the study program, location and practice partner, the dual studies program at the CIE takes place either in a weekly rotation (1 week practice, 1 week theory) or in a split-week model (50% of the week practice and 50% of the week theory). You can find out more about this from our student advisory service or on our study model page.
Are there tuition fees in dual studies? Who pays them?
At the CIE, you pay € 0 – because your practice partner (depending on partner and program) pays your tuition fees.
How can I apply to study at the CIE dual studies program?
Simply complete our online application. You can upload the required documents directly there, or submit them later in our applicant portal:

How long does the dual study program take?
The Bachelor’s program at CIE lasts 3.5 years (7 semesters). Master and Doctoral Degree can vary.
What are the admission requirements? Is there an NC in dual studies?
We deliberately do not have a numerus clausus. Instead, you will have an individual CIE interview with your study advisor. You will talk about your wishes and professional goals and together you will find out in which areas your strengths lie.
Here is an overview of our admission requirements:
Studying with A-levels
As an applicant with a general university entrance qualification (Abitur) or a technical college entrance qualification (Fach-Abitur), you can be admitted directly to the dual Bachelor’s programme at the IU.
Studying without A-levels
Without a (specialist) A-levels, entry is possible if you meet one of the following requirements:
- Completed vocational training of at least two years and at least three years of work experience in the learned profession.
- Master craftsman's diploma
- Successful completion of a training course to become a state-certified technician or state-certified business economist
Applicants from abroad
As a foreign applicant, you must have a higher education entrance qualification equivalent to the specific country qualification. When applying, you must provide proof of your qualification. In addition, you will have an individual interview with your study advisor.
How does the company search work in dual studies?
When searching for companies, we draw on our network of over 25,000 practical partners and also support you in your application to other companies. For this purpose, you will be in constant contact with your study advisor in our applicant portal, where you will receive lots of helpful tips and can register for our free CIE training. CIE offers Bachelor’s degree program in the fields of Business & Management, Health & Social Services, Marketing & Communication, IT & Technology and Tourism & Hospitality. You can find all details under study program.
